July 8th

I wake up in the morning, walk my dogs, make my coffee and breakfast, head out to work, do my job, then go home just to do it all over again the following day.

I have a system. A way of living that is fit for me and I live a healthy lifestyle. I’ve always been brought up to be responsible for myself. My mother always taught me that; even though she was terminally ill all my life. After she received a kidney transplant, she finally had her first full drink of orange juice. Orange juice? Yeah, someone who loses their kidneys can not drink water, eat a banana, etc. You are restricted. It’s like being in prison. So, once I saw her drink for the first time, I realized how much I have taken life and all it’s blessings for granted. Then came diabetes, followed by terminal cancer.

Her world and mine fell apart, but this lady, this mother of mine, was one hell of a fighter. Disabled, yet still providing for her 3 kids.

Before she died, I was able to share with her my hopes, my dreams as that she was my #1 fan even though she lived in Los Angeles and I lived in Miami. She was a lover of Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard….(wow!) a Cowboys fan AND she fought for life. She said “be the quarterback for people, but remember you have to be a receiver too.” What an oxymoron, that made some sense.

Now, I’m doing something for myself, my mother and others that desperately need help and that is for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! It was brought to my attention by the folks here at 93 ROCK: Wanna Try The Nation’s Triathlon! OMG!

I didn’t think I could do it. But, I wanted to lose weight, to use the strength and perseverance I saw in my mother and to transfer my energy into helping a great cause! I never thought I would ever do a freaking TRIATHLON!

So now, we are in middle of training. You have men and women, short and tall, some fit, others not. I never thought I would run over a mile and not stop. I never thought I could swim close to a mile. I never thought I could ride my bike 14 miles. Of course, bruising is the usual and OUCH is just not the word to describe the feeling. Through it all, I realize that I do have emotional and spiritual strength, but to feel my physical strength was one that affected me the most.

In future blogs, I will keep you updated on my story, along with my teammate’s stories, and how our experiences have brought us together to fight cancer.

As you are reading this, you are most likely thinking about someone you know that has been affected by this disease.

Feel free to let me know your story and what is going on in your world when it comes to this dreaded disease or any disease. Know that you’re not alone and our 93 ROCK nation is a hardworking one with so many similar issues. We are in this together. Heck, maybe we can teammates for the next events coming up….check out TeamInTraining.org/sfl/.

We are a nation of rockers. We can be hard. We can be this kick ass community. But, we also deal with issues like this. Let this be your outlet and I promise we’ll listen.

More postings are coming shortly with more detailed info on what my training is like…..stay tuned!
