The majority of Americans voted for change, Michael Phelps emerged as an Olympic superstar by hitting the pool, and then the bong, and Scott Weiland stumbled back into Stone Temple Pilots. Today we look back at the year...2008!- February 19 - System Of A Down's guitarist, Daron Malakian, says that the band is not likely to reform as he will be concentrating on his new project, Scars On Broadway.
- February 16 - The 2008 Langerado Music Festival is held on the Big Cypress Indian Reservation, thirty miles west of Fort Lauderdale and featured on-site camping. It was to be the final Langerado. The decision to move the festival to Downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park in 2009, disappointed fans. The festival ended up being canceled due to sluggish ticket sales.
- April 1 - Scott Weiland's departure from Velvet Revolver becomes official. Weiland's reunion with his former band, Stone Temple Pilots, and tensions between Weiland and the rest of Velvet Revolver, led to his departure. Oh and probably the drugs, lots and lots of drugs.
- April 7 - The newly reunited Stone Temple Pilots hold a press conference announcing a 65-date reunion tour and play for the first time since 2002 in Los Angeles. Scott Weiland shocked the world actually finishing the tour.
- May 16 - The Offspring begin the first leg of their "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" Tour to promote their new album, "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace. Not as catchy as their original name for the tour, "The Shizz is Fizzed Up Tour", but the fact they couldn't promote the tour due to the obscenity factor, in turn not sell any tickets , caused for a tour name change AND a new Marketing Director.
- June 6-7 - Foo Fighters play their biggest UK stadium shows at Wembley Stadium in London. The second night would feature a collaboration with very special guests, Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page.
- June 29 - Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is released. It's the first video game in the Guitar Hero series to be based around a single music group.
- July 1 - In support of their new album and first will all members since 1997, "Saints Of Los Angeles", Motley Crue launch the first ever Crue Fest in West Palm Beach. While the concert world was feeling the aches of the recession with declining ticket sales, Crue Fest earned around $40 million and was the most successful and most popular festival of the summer.
- September 12 - Metallica release their first studio album in five years, "Death Magnetic". It is the band's first studio album to feature current bassist, Robert Trujillo. The album is the band's fifth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, making Metallica the first band ever to achieve five consecutive number one debuts.
- October 20 - AC/DC release the first studio album in eight years, "Black Ice", supported by a World Tour.
- November 2 - AC/DC become the first band to have their own version of the video game Rock Band, following the release of "AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack".
- November 11 - Nickelback release the much-anticipated "Dark Horse" CD to follow up their 2005 seven-times platinum album, "All the Right Reasons".
- November 23 - After years of overhype, Guns N' Roses release their first album containing original material in 17 years, "Chinese Democracy". The CD greatly undersold expectations, only selling 600,000 copies in the United States. This could explain why the band currently only tours overseas.
- AC/DC - "Black Ice" sold 2.9 million copies
- Nickelback - "Dark Horse" sold 2.5 million copies
- Metallica - "Death Magnetic" sold 1.9 million copies
- Disturbed - "Indestructible" sold 1 million copies
