2008 Olympics - Competition Schedule and Results

The Official Website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

::SWIMMING::
Dara Torres
Already the oldest swimming gold medalist, Torres could raise that record from 33 to 41 by winning gold again in Beijing. She is also the oldest American swimmer to qualify for the Olympics and the first to make five teams. Remarkably, Torres was the oldest member of the 2000 Olympic team, but she won't be in Beijing: 56-year-old shooter Libby Callahan has that distinction. ::GYMNASTICS::
Shawn Johnson
Iowa's Shawn Johnson will be 16 at the 2008 Games -- the same age as the only other American Olympic all-around champions: Mary Lou Retton and Carly Patterson. Her coaches, Liang Chow and Liwen Zhuang, are Beijing natives who met, and fell in love, while competing for the Chinese national team. Johnson will enter the Beijing Games as the reigning world all-around champion. Due to her combination of difficult routines and impeccable execution, four hit routines would almost assure her a gold. More info on Shawn and the rest of the USA Women and Men's Gymnastic Teams

::BASKETBALL::
Dwayne Wade
A late addition to the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, Dwyane Wade will be one of Team USA's leaders in Beijing. After an impressive rookie season with the NBA's Miami Heat, the guard averaged 7.3 points and 17.6 minutes a game in Athens, where the U.S. took bronze. Wade saw much more playing time at the 2006 World Championships, for which he was named a tri-captain with Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. That team also won bronze. But the core of the team remained intact for the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, where the U.S. cruised to a gold medal and qualified for the 2008 Games in the process. However, Wade sat out that tournament following shoulder and knee surgery, meaning he still has yet to win gold for Team USA. More info on D. Wade and the rest of the USA Men's and Women's Basketball Teams

::TRACK & FIELD::
Lopez Lomong
Lopez Lomong will make his Olympic debut for the United States this summer in Beijing, where he will look to contend for a medal in the men's 1500m. Lomong has overcome an overwhelming array of obstacles in reaching Beijing. He came to the U.S. as one of "The Lost Boys of Sudan" and is one of three naturalized U.S. citizens on the Olympic 1500m team. Read more about Lopez's amazing story and the rest of the USA Track & Field Team

::SOCCER::
Lauren Cheney
Lauren Cheney had open-heart surgery when she was three years old to correct an atrial septal defect, a congenital heart defect characterized by a hole in the upper chamber of the heart. Doctors recommended to her parents, George and Rita, that she be active in sports to aid her recovery. Thus, her athletic career was spawned. She began playing soccer at age four, following in her brother's footsteps. A forward, Cheney registered her first cap with the national team against Germany at the Four Nations Tournament in January 2007. She scored her first goal in a 5-0 victory over Mexico in April 2007 and added a second tally against Finland at the 2008 Four Nations Cup in China. More info on Lauren and the rest of the USA Women's and Men's Soccer Teams

::SOFTBALL::
Jennie Finch
Jennie Finch will look to represent the United States at the Olympics for the second time in her career this summer in Beijing, where she will be one of the pitchers for the gold-medal favorite. Finch, who is one of the most recognized female athletes in the world, made her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004, finishing with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. In two starts, she threw eight innings, striking out 13 batters and allowing just one hit and one walk. The right-hander played in her first World Championship in 2002 and helped the U.S. win the gold medal. She posted a 2-0 record and 1.17 ERA while striking out 12 batters in 12 innings.
